In vitro fertilization (IVF) With the advances in health technologies like IVF, now couples don’t have to try for years to get pregnant naturally. IVF addresses various issues of infertility and, with a high success rate, makes it possible to have a healthy baby. If you are unable to conceive and planning to undergo IVF, the doctors at the IVF center can help you to decide if it is the right choice for you.

What is InVitro Fertilization?

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). It uses a combination of medicines and surgical procedures that allows the sperm to fertilize an egg outside the body in a laboratory. This fertilized egg is called an embryo, which is transfered into a woman’s uterus.

In Vitro Fertilization Process

Before beginning with IVF procedure Reproductive Endocrinologist will advise you to undergo certain tests. These tests will asses your ovaries and uterine function and help your doctor to determine the best approach for IVF therapy. One cycle of IVF procedure generally takes 15 to 20 days from the starting date of your period. This is followed by 15 days of waiting to do a pregnancy test.

When some complex issues become the reason for your infertility, advanced technologies like ICSI become a ray of hope. All these fertility treatment options have a single goal, that is to achieve a healthy pregnancy. Long back when ICSI was not invented, male infertility due to low sperm count was considered untreatable. The ICSI procedure has enabled many couples who were unable to conceive or were dependent on donor sperm, to conceive their biological child through IVF.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a conventional IVF procedure where fertilization of the egg is achieved through a different approach. Generally, fertilization occurs when a sperm attaches itself to the egg and penetrates through the outer layer. For some reason, the sperm may fail to penetrate the egg. In such a condition, ICSI can be done along with IVF to achieve pregnancy. During ICSI, a single sperm is picked and is injected directly into the egg.

ICSI is performed by an experienced embryologist using specialized instruments. Though ICSI is a precise procedure but still for fertilization to occur, required cellular events need to take place.

It is a technique in which an embryo is developed in the laboratory for 4-6 days after fertilization before being placed in the womb. The embryo gains many cells as a result of being developed for so many days. The embryo developed for 4-6 days are much more advanced than the ones developed for just three days. These embryos are called blastocysts.

The embryo which survives for 4-6 days is more likely to produce fruitful results. This enables embryologists to select from the more advanced embryos with better potential for implantation.

The biggest advantage of the Blastocyst Culture and Transfer method is that it significantly reduces the risk of multiple pregnancies. Also, the pregnancy and implantation success rate is higher in this technique because it is easy to determine the robust embryos after developing for 4-6 days, hence, only the competent embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Sonography or ultrasound is a technique, which utilises high-frequency sound waves to show images of the structures within a body. The gel is applied to the skin where it’s been examined and a small device is pressed against that area. Mostly Sonography is used on female to produce reproductive organs to get images during their pregnancy. This technique provides valuable information for treating many chronic ailments and to take necessary measure for pregnant women. Every medical treatment requires timely monitoring to know the progression of the cure of the respective medical condition. Sonography is a diagnostic service that helps find out the status of the reproductive health of the female partner before, during and after IVF treatment.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most commonly utilised fertility treatments to treat infertility in couples and showing them the path to parenthood. Sonography shows them there the first image of being parenthood. Ultrasound imaging can be of various types such as transvaginal ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound. Transvaginal ultrasound is more commonly used when it comes to diagnosing and monitoring female reproductive parts.

Hysteroscopy is an essential step if you are undergoing any fertility evaluation or looking for an IVF. Hysteroscopy helps to diagnose and treat the problems associated with your uterus. During unsuccessful IVF attempts, hysteroscopy is advised to determine underlying issues related to the uterus. It allows your doctor to diagnose the intrauterine pathology and decide the best line of treatment.

During IVF, it is essential to check for any intrauterine defect that can interfere with the implantation. Hysteroscopy enables better evaluation of any such issues and also improves your chances of conception.

What is Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that enables the surgeon to view the internal structures of your uterine cavity without the need for an incision. The uterine cavity is examined for any intrauterine pathology and opening of fallopian tubes. Removal of polyps or taking a biopsy sample is done during a hysteroscopy procedure. It is a minimally invasive procedure which needs short hospital stay and has a faster recovery.

MALE INFERTILITY

If you are facing male infertility you are not alone. One in every eight couples face problems in getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. Approximately one-third of infertility is attributed to the male partner.

Infertility is failure to get pregnant even after twelve months of unprotected sexual intercourse. Many factors contribute to male infertility, such as anatomical, genetic, and environmental causes. In many cases, the underlying cause of infertility cannot be determined. You need to consider undergoing formal assessments and tests for better clinical diagnosis.

Male Infertility Symptoms

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• Reduced sexual desire

• Difficulty in maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction)

• Pain or swelling in the testicle area

• Difficulty in ejaculation

• Decreased facial and body hair, and abnormal breast growth or hormonal abnormality

Visit your doctor to get yourself evaluated for these symptoms. Sometimes there are no apparent signs and symptoms of male infertility. You may not experience any issues with sexual activity, erection or ejaculation, and the only symptom you will have is the inability to conceive a child.

Semen analysis

This is a routine lab test in which semen is collected in a sterile tube, and the sample is studied. The quality of the sperm is analyzed by studying sperm volume, sperm count, movement, concentration, and structure. Low sperms or no sperms indicate blockage of the ejaculatory duct, which can be corrected through surgery.
